I'd forgotten about turtle back braid! I sometimes wish I could have a conversation with my grandmothers and great-grandmothers to see what techniques they were interested in.
I know rick rack is very old and a lot older than your piece of paper, but I have never heard of turtle back braid.
Just for your curiosity, I've heard that in Italian they were used to be called mignardise, "à la française"
