A few weeks ago, Umi&Tsuru issued a challenge to tat a design from Ruth Scharf's book, Occhi. Since this is one of those books I have been meaning to take off the shelf and use for a long time, this seemed just the thing for my current motif challenge. I decided to go for a very traditional approach and chose this ecru thread. I regretted that at times, when I saw the wide variety of colors shown by other bloggers accepting the challenge. I also decided to make all the lock joins down into the base of the rings as in the original pattern. I think it's a very interesting effect, though it was a bit tricky getting the tension just right.
If you don't have the book, you can still join in, because she had permission to post the flower and leaf patterns.
Also, we recently had Jane's Tat It and See surprise pattern, which turned out to be a goat!
Your flowers are looking wonderful, and your goat is lovely

That is a very interesting effect with the lock joins. I haven't seen anything like that in tatting before. I do think that effect works best in a solid thread; it would look odd in some of the bright variegated threads that some participants are using. I think the traditional ecru is nice.
ReplyDeleteYou did it! I had the thought to tat the flowers with that method because the pic in the Ruth Scharf book showed the picots to be somewhat like the ones you have tatted. I was not brave enough and now I do regret it! Your motifs look great. I have learned a mighty lesson here... Thank you!

Great to see your flowers and the effect of the original joins!
ReplyDeleteLove the look. I will generally tat a pattern in ecru if I am tatting it for the first time. Ecru is so much easier to get than the colored threads.
ReplyDeleteHas it been that long since the patterns were shown? My goodness. I haven't started them yet.
ReplyDeleteYours look beautiful and timeless in the ecru.
I'm so into tatting your critters that I'm giving the challenge a miss. I like the way you joined the flowers. I did that before and thought they were wrong! Of course those were in the early days when I picked up tatting. Looking forward to seeing your pieces come together.
